Interview with Finance MBA Program Director Na Hyun Seung Q. Please briefly introduce yourself and the F-MBA course Since January of this year, I have been the program director of F-MBA. I am a faculty member of the finance sector, and I teach and study topics of corporate finance and corporate governance. Although the F-MBA program has a history of 13 years, last year it has changed to a two-year part-time course from a one-year full time course, and the overall nature of the course, including its curriculum and membership, has changed dramatically since last year. In the process, former director Jung Ji Woong worked very hard, and I have taken over from this year to pursue both stability and change. The purpose of F-MBA is to foster financial experts who lead change in the financial industry through an independent Part-Time MBA program specialized in the financial sector. In line with the rapidly changing financial market and the trend of the times, we aim to help students acquire not only traditional financial theories but also new and practical financial knowledge and thinking abilities, and to have the ability to apply it in practice and lead changes in the financial industry. Q. What do you think of any future changes in the direction of the program's? The first generation of alumni will be released at the end of this semester after the part-time course transition. Based on my experience during the first two years, I think my current challenge is to maintain the overall direction of the program while increasing the level of detail. Based on trials and errors that were inevitable in the initial trial and error process, we are reorganizing the curriculum in part, and we are also planning to set up a field trip to see foreign financial markets based on the opinions of our students. Also, a cross-registration system is on the process of settling down so that students may take general business administration courses of the Korea MBA within certain limits. We intend to continue to develop new subjects that reflect future trends in financial markets and are more subdivided into various sectors of the financial sector so as to achieve quantitative and qualitative growth through specialized courses in the financial sector. Q. What are the advantages of Korea University's F-MBA which is different from other schools and courses? First of all, it's an independent process specialized in finance. Instead of having some additional finance-related subjects added to the general MBA course, the entire two-year process focuses on the knowledge acquisition required by the financial industry. Therefore, they are more specialized for students who are engaged in the financial sector or want to enter the financial sector compared to other courses. Second, it is a process that reflects not only traditional themes and knowledge, but also recent changes in the financial industry and practical aspects. For example, we train computer programming, big data and machine learning, including R and Python, to reflect the recent trend in the financial industry that has been associated with rapidly evolving IT. In addition, we invite working-level experts, who are mainly active in the financial industry, to share living knowledge of the site. Last summer, we invited experts in private equity, venture capital, investment banking, asset management, etc. to give special lectures. In general, we also have working-level experts participating to deliver knowledge that is helpful to our business. Q. Please say something to those who dream of becoming a prospective MBA. The financial market is changing rapidly. In particular, technological developments such as fintech, big data, artificial intelligence, and blockchain are converging with the financial industry, creating a completely new market environment, and various regulatory changes to accommodate them are also being discussed. Even today's financial workers may feel insecure about the changes and are also feeling the need for education on new trends. The F-MBA is open to those who want to actively embrace these changes, respond and lead. I want you to share your experience and passion with the F-MBA and prepare for a new future.

[Interview with Dr. Hwang Hyun, recently appointed to university in US] "It is important to write an original paper that attracts academic attention" Hwang Hyun (Accounting Major) / Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin 황현 박사(회계학 전공) / 미국 University of Texas at Austin 조교수 임용 Q. Please introduce yourself. Hello. My name is Hwang Hyun, and I graduated KUBS 07. I went to University of Pennsylvania as an exchange student in spring, 2012. Then I graduated Korea University with a double degree in business and financial engineering. I received my Ph.D. in accounting from Carnegie Mellon University in May 2019. I am now working as an assistant professor of accounting major at the University of Texas at Austin since June of this year. Q. How did you prepare your doctoral thesis and appointment while you were in the doctoral program? My goal was to write a paper that was original and appealing to the academia. To do this, I read countless papers and listened to various critical comments humbly. I also did my best to make my paper as concise and easy to read as possible. Because it was a difficult process, I tried not to lose confidence. I believe that this experience has helped me to develop my ability to perform my research independently and to be appointed. Q. What factors do you think positively influenced your appointment? First of all, I think Job-Market Paper (hereinbelow JMP) is the most important part. To write a good JMP, it is important to have a) ingenious and inquisitive questions and b) simple, easy-to-read writing. This is because professors read a lot of JMPs to evaluate appointment positions. JMP presentations are also important. C) A concise and clear introduction and d) good answer to unexpected questions are the two most important factors for a good presentation. For a good introduction, you need to clarify the research questions of your thesis, the results and importance of thesis, and the methodology in which you conducted the research. Also, in order to answer well, it is necessary to fully understand your paper. To minimize unexpected questions arising from your paper, you need endless effort towards your paper. Despite these efforts, you might still receive unexpected questions. I think that it is much better to frankly answer that you are not sure in that situation. Finally, it is also important to create other projects as well as JMP during the Ph.D. program. This will help you appeal your ability to write many papers in the future. Q. I am curious about your future plans. I want to get a deeper understanding of the nature of accounting. What amazed me during my research is the lack of understanding of why accounting standards are generally accepted. Therefore, I want to understand the essence of accounting in depth. On the educational side, I want to reduce the gap between accounting research and education. Therefore, I want to aim at mathematical understanding of double bookkeeping, the most important concept in accounting class. It would be meaningful if this could supplement or replace the balance sheet and income statement used in accounting education and field for hundreds of years. Q. Could you give some advice for younger students who dream of becoming a global scholar? Research is a series of training to find answers to questions that our society possesses. Patience, persistence, and confidence are essential for this. The importance of researchers who are able to present a frame of thought in the flood of information will become more important in the future.

CEMS Interview with Lotta & Pietro Introduction of CEMS Students: Lotta Mäki Lotta is a final-year CEMS MIM student from Aalto University, Finland, to whom South Korea is the 37th country visited. In addition to her CEMS degree, she is currently pursuing a double MSc degree in Business Analytics and Astrophysics. Pietro Tansini Pietro is final-year student of CEMS and MSc in International Management from Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. He has worked and lived in 5 different continents with experiences ranging from start-up to multinational corporations. Questions : a. Why did you choose CEMS? [Lotta] I first heard about CEMS as a freshman, but immediately knew that this was my place to be as I dreamt of an international career. The global network of like-minded students and over 70 corporate partners provide you with incredible opportunities during your MIM year, but it is also a community that will have your back for a lifetime. b. What is special about CEMS students? [Pietro] CEMS does not only provide leading education in business, but is primarily a community of people who across generations share the same ambition to have a positive impact through their work. To me the innumerable occasions to meet and learn from each other are the real added value that makes CEMS a life-changing experience. c. What is the value of CEMS network? / How did CEMS improve your network? Through CEMS network I have already gained valuable professional mentoring and even various job opportunities. d. What can you tell us about the extracurricular activities you attended during your CEMS experience? [Pietro] Definitely CEMS Cup activities that were organized by CEMS Club Seoul! During the semester we split our cohort in 4 teams and had many occasions to collect points to our own team by participating for example a Pub Quiz or small daily recycling tasks during our Sustainability Week, and many others. It worked extremely well to bond with each other and create closer relations within the group! e. What is the role of the CEMS Club? [Lotta] Every member school in CEMS Alliance has their own CEMS Club, which support global networking among students by arranging social activities both locally and overseas together with other CEMS Clubs. CEMS Club also co-operates with CEMS Corporate Partners to provide students with professional development opportunities. f. What has CEMS taught you that you would have not learned otherwise? [Pietro] I think what is really unique about CEMS is the high exposure to corporate environment. It helps immensely to bridge the gap between student and work life. Beyond the professional aspect, even though I had traveled and lived in many countries, I found CEMS the best experience to learn how to be a really conscious citizen of the world. g. What were your best CEMS experiences during the semester at KUBS? [Lotta] Highlights of this semester were definitely our two successful networking field trips in the APAC area. We visited CEMS Club Hong Kong together with CEMSies from Singapore and CEMS Club Tokyo together with CEMS students from Beijing! These trips really demostrated CEMS spirit at its best! [Global MBA] Interview of Cho Sang-uk, 13th G-MBA Q. Could you please introduce yourself? Hi, I am the President of the 13th Global MBA (hereinafter G-MBA) Cho Sang-uk. Before entering G-MBA, I majored finance at NYU, and built a career in finance at New York. While working in the M&A field, I have witnessed so many success stories in which bankers turned to the start-up field and received billions of investments. Naturally, I became to have my own dreams about start-ups. During my first year as an analyst, I made my first challenge in a start-up at New York as I placed outside orders. It was my first start-up and I relied heavily on outside orders, so it wasn’t a success but came to be a valuable experience. Based on my network that I built in my first start-up, I came back to Korea to benchmark a New York F&B business and started my second start-up. Q. Why have you decided to study at Korea University G-MBA? I have received most of my education abroad, and built my career abroad as well. Thus, I felt that it was important to experience education and social life in Korea. Most importantly, I realized that I do not have sufficient information about Korea nor an appropriate network as I managed a start-up at Korea. Naturally, I decided to enter Korea University’s GMBA whose specialty lies in networking, unlike other schools. Q. What was the most useful course/program/activity while attending G-MBA? Professor Yoo Yong Keun’s “Financial Accounting” class and Professor Kim Young-Kyu’s “Strategy” class was very useful. First, Professor Yoo’s accounting class is very interesting, and he helped my classmates and I to familiarize with accounting and finance easily. For example, he compared corporate or financial M&A to marrying couples’ financial union, which was an interesting analogy. Professor Kim dealt with real business cases based on Harvard Business School Cases. Moreover, he also offered us a chance to present the best strategy for a company after reading a mock company case in 24 hours, in front of a real startup/VC official. I was extremely pleased because my group ranked first in this event. Q. Please tell us about your career plans upon graduation. A lot of thoughts are in my mind. I have seriously considered about having a private business, but I am willing to fully utilize Korea University MBA's network and resources, and am very interested in venture or private equity-type buy side. Q. Do you have any advice for those who are thinking of attending G-MBA? I have heard about Korea University's excellence in networking several times before I entered the school, but I was very concerned about whether it is true or not. After entering G-MBA, I experienced various networking events, and felt the bond between my fellow students become stronger. In particular, I was proud to see Korea University's high attendance at events such as Go -Yeon Games and events with other schools. Thanks to Korea University's optimal environment for academics and networking, I have been able to maintain a strong friendship with my fellow students. Interview of KUBS Student Ambassador KUBE 9th Yoon Ji-hyun Becoming a KUBS Student Ambassador from a ‘Teen Mentee’ Q.Could you please introduce yourself? My name is Yoon Ji-hyun, and I am currently a sophomore at Korea University Business School. I participated in the third ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ as a teen mentee in my second year at high school, and ever since this event I began to dream of entering KUBS. After entering KUBS, I participated in the seventh ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event as an undergraduate mentor. And since September 2018, I am working as a student ambassador for KUBS in my hope of leading the way through promoting KUBS. Q. You have experienced both roles in the ‘Teen Mentoring Event‘ as a teen mentee and a student ambassador. What is the most memorable episode? For me, every moment that I had as a mentee, mentor, and an ambassador is memorable that I cherish. Out of all moments, I want to tell you what happened most recently. During our regular tour in November 2018, I advised high school students of my group to participate in the ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event that is held during winter break as I told them about my high school days. I actually met those students in the mentoring event last January, and I was pleased to hear that they applied for the event through my advice. I was not only proud of them but also happy that I was able to help someone. Afterwards, I promised myself to work even harder as a student ambassador with pride. Q. Have you dreamt of entering KUBS since you were a teen mentee? What did you learn from the Teen Mentoring event? I participated in one of the regular tours at Korea University in my first year of high school. The senior student who introduced the business department was cool, and I was impressed by the grand buildings. Since then I just decided that I would study to go to KUBS. One day, while looking around the KUBS website, I learned about the ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event and participated as a teen mentee. Particularly, planning and introducing products, ‘Marketing Practice,’ was the most memorable. I became interested in marketing as I actively came up with ideas and presented them in front of people, and came to hope for a career in marketing. Thus, the ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event hosted by KUBS helped me to have a new dream regarding business administration. Q. Ever since you participated in the 7th ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event as an undergraduate mentor, you are working as KUBS’s student ambassador ‘KUBE.’ What made you become a student ambassador? What came in mind right after I got admitted to KUBS was that I want to become a mentor in the ‘Teen Mentoring Day’ event. From my experience as participating in the event as a mentee, I know how the event is a special and crucial chance, so I wanted to help students in their shoes. More than anything, I love my fellow KUBE ambassadors who approached me and gave so much love. I was so excited to be a KUBE ambassador and attach a KUBS symbol in my chest, which is something that I drew so many times in my notebook when I was a high school student. So after the Mentoring Day event without hesitancy I applied to be a member of KUBE, and was able to get good results as I appealed to that experience. Q. Please tell us what you want to say finally. If somebody asks the best thing I’ve done since I entered university, I would proudly say ‘becoming a member of KUBE.’ While working as KUBE, I was reminded of my high school days, and I was amazed to know how the programs I participated in were made. KUBE activities were fun, so I enjoyed working with KUBE friends and teachers. I want to say thank you to the 8th KUBE ambassadors who worked so hard and the 9th KUBE ambassadors who will continue to work with me. Now, I would like to sincerely welcome our 10th KUBE ambassadors. I will end by saying that I always thank and love Korea University Business School which has been with me since I was in high school, KUBE 8th, 9th, 10th ambassadors, and teachers of the PR office.

[KUBS Student Council ‘Wave’] Interview with President Q. Please introduce KUBS student council ‘Wave’. [President] Good Afternoon. I am Park Jun Hyun, president of WAVE, the 52nd student council. We are working with the slogan 'Your wish becomes a wave' from November 2018. Currently, the student council consists of 10 members including the presidency and the director of the 7 departments. When the new member recruiting is completed, more members will participate in various projects such as career development, welfare, culture, sports for KUBS. [Vice President] Good Afternoon I am Cho Yong Joon, vice president of WAVE. WAVE has a wide range of projects in culture, welfare and career development, and we are doing everything we can to help KUBS students. This year we are planning a cultural education project called 'Color U' and a career development project for senior students. I will work hard for this year. Q. What is the core value that WAVE pursues? [President] 'Empathy' and ‘Strong Drive' are two core values that WAVE pursues. So far, many student councils have tried to get closer to the students, but it was not easy to narrow down the distance. We, WAVE, want to share empathy by narrowing the distance. Just like the slogan of 'Your wish becomes a wave', our core value is to create real results and make our students’ wishes come true. [Vice President] ‘Society without hurt students’ is another core value that WAVE pursues. We will work hard to make sure that as many students as possible are eligible for the projects we have planned, regardless of its kind. We will conduct a variety of surveys to hear opinions of the minority, and carefully consider all voices. I think that the various opinions and interests of the students will become our driving force. Q.What kind of effort is WAVE making for KUBS freshmen? [President] First of all, in order to ensure smooth school life for freshmen, we prepared two orientation programs since December. Thanks to that, we finished the orientation without any accident. In addition, we are preparing programs such as career development and cultural lectures so that freshmen can accumulate much experience inside KUBS. Furthermore, we are working to provide a pleasant educational environment to the students through the projects such as the establishment of the male student lounge and the improvement of the female student lounge. [Vice President] As mentioned above, we prepared freshmen welcoming orientation for about two months and completed it successfully. We thought providing adequate information would be the best way to relieve fear about school life for freshmen students, and we are also trying to make an atmosphere where students can approach and ask questions to our seniors without any inconvenience. One example is to set up a variety of rules and codes of conduct among students to prevent freshmen from feeling burdensome when drinking. It is our greatest goal to gather opinions from new students who are not easily able to deliver their thoughts easily because of their fear about school life. Q.Do you have any suggestions for freshmen as seniors of KUBS? [[President] I would like to advise you to go through as much experience as possible. I believe that first year in university is the best time to experience various things without any burden or worry about academics. I would like to advise you to go through as many experiences as possible, and to meet a lot of people without any worries. I believe you will find the clothes that suit you best in that process. I hope you will experience diverse things without feeling any pressure. [Vice President] It's okay to take a break. You have just completed a fierce entrance examination and entered Korea University while overcoming the burden and concerns from others. Good results are a fortune, but that kind of burden will only keep you running. No one will blame you for taking a break. We will always wait for you with strong belief, so we hope you will have a little time to rest, meet your friends, and have time to charge for yourself while doing what you wish to do. Interview with the executive branch ‘Blossom’ of ‘KUBS Ladies’ the Business School Female Alumni Association ▲ From the left: Hyewon Kim (Business School 16) New Student Representative, Namkyung Lee (Business School 16) Current Student Representative Q. Please introduce KUBS Ladies and the Blossom team. KUBS Ladies is the Business School Female Alumni Association. Different from other alumni associations, the executive branch for enrolled students exists and has the role of making connections between alumni and enrolled students. The executive branch for enrolled students of KUBS Ladies got its name ‘Blossom’ in 2016 to ‘bloom’ the network between enrolled students and alumni. Q. What kind of pivotal roles does Blossom have as the executive branch of KUBS Ladies? Our main job is to link enrolled students and alumni. We started to plan offline events by creating high-quality images and reducing a sense of distance at the same time. Some major events are: the Dream Concert, Beginning Semester’s Event, and ‘Good Evening’ mentoring program that connects female alumni and female enrolled students. In addition, another important role of Blossom is updating the contact information of our female alumni. We are also trying hard to stabilize our management by administering donations every year. Q. How does the Blossom team and KUBS Ladies view female alumni and fellow students of the Business School? We believe they have ‘soft charisma’. Previously, we have discussed about ‘the image of KUBS female alumni’ with the former Associate dean. We concluded that KUBS female alumni have both the charisma that KUBS has and the softness which is differentiated from the leadership of men. Another characteristic of KUBS female alumni could be a progressive spirit of challenging without fear. Q. Are there any difficulties when acting as the Blossom team? Since the number of people in our team is small and most of the programs are run on an annual basis, members of the executive branch work for one and a half year to two years to smoothen transition of events. 2 out of 4 years in the university life is quite long. Programs such as business conferences, the exchange student program, and internship are generalized due to the characteristic of the Business School, but there are some cases where students must give up these programs because it is difficult to run parallel with ‘Blossom’ activities. Therefore, we are trying to find a way to allow members of the executive branch to be involved in more healthy activities that are worthwhile. Q. Please tell us about your aspirations (to New Student Representative). Ultimately, I believe the key goal is to achieve an ‘expansion of network’. Facing its 6th anniversary, ‘Blossom’ seems to be in a transition period. If ‘Blossom’ can regularly contact our alumni by mailing them based on the updated list of alumni, then we will be able to strengthen their sense of belonging to more alumni. If the network can be extended, the quality of networking can be developed even more. For example, if Blossom can act as a passage that delivers helpful employment information such as informal internship notices from companies that our alumni work in, then we believe both the alumni and students will be more interested in KUBS Ladies. Q. Does the current student representative have any words of request to the new representative? I indeed had good experiences for two years that would not have been possible without Blossom. However, there will be hard times. Blossom is in a transition period. It has just been established, and donations are not stable which makes managing the organization a hard task. Nevertheless, I would like to say never give up. I believe the true meaning of this organization exists when the goal of networking among female alumni is continually found. I hope KUBS Ladies and Blossom set an example for a strong sense of belonging and network to female alumni for one year. Q. Do you have any words to female alumni and students of KUBS? I have met many alumni while acting as a member of Blossom. I could feel their true heart towards the school and our alumni. Whenever we contacted them to update the alumni list or ask them to participate in events, we were happily welcomed. It was very helpful when we heard ‘If you need help, contact us anytime’. We would really like to thank seniors who are willing to materially and emotionally support us with their love towards the school and juniors, and we will also try to become one of them after graduating KUBS. Moreover, we would like to ask more participation and attention from enrolled students. Blossom has many events provided for them. They have good quality and we are putting the best of our effort to prepare for them. A lot of opportunities are provided by our outstanding guest speakers, so we recommend that many students participate in these events and receive beneficial information.

After entering Amway Korea in 2011, he is currently in charge of the APAC (Asia Pacific) area Amway Business Center Operation in the Amway Business & Brand Center Operation Team of the head office. We were able to hear about the Korea MBA from him. What made you decide to enter the MBA course? I decided to enter the MBA course because I thought it will be important to improve my competence as a manager in Amway Korea and to become an expert. First, I wanted to organize my knowledge gained through 8 years of working experience at the company and receive a more systematic education to utilize those experiences. I also wanted to gain knowledge regarding a more efficient method of managing data and be familiar with realistic cases where unpredictable incidents happen in the front line of the management. Secondly, I wanted to have experience about decision making as a manager in advance. Especially, I have experienced how much Manager & Supervisor decisions influenced sales in business. Lastly, I wanted to understand the overall trend by apprehending the management of other companies. By understanding the general trend of the market and acquiring information about various fields, I wanted to become an expert with a broader perspective. The reason why I chose Korea University is because I wanted to enter the ‘best MBA’. Above all, Korea University’s MBA is Korea’s top-notch MBA that ranked as No.1 for six consecutive years at the MBA evaluation by 300 human resource directors of conglomerates. I had to study business administration at Korea since I graduated University of Oregon in the United States and didn’t hesitate to enter the course by getting to know important information about K-MBA with the help of my wife. What curriculum helped you the most during the Korea MBA course? Professor Hojung Shin’s ‘Principles of OM’ helped the most during the course. There was a synergy effect of an improved working efficiency by making a connection between experienced gained from the actual work and expertise learned during class. Also, professor Soongsoo Han’s ‘Financial Accounting’ substantially improved my lack of financial knowledge. What are some things that can be earned other than the regular curriculum of the MBA course? I can speak with confidence that it is ‘human networking’. I believe the human networking of K-MBA is better than any other school. The fact that there are sports clubs such as the golf club (K-ONE) and the tennis club allows me to gain a lot of energy because I am a person that loves sports. Also, I am also participating in an investment club KMIU (Korea MBA Investor Union) which is not a formal club yet but is aiming to become one next year. Do you have any advice for people who are interested in entering MBA? I really want to say challenge it. I also remember the days being concerned and discussing whether to do so with my wife and fellow workers because it is not easy to keep up with your office work and studies at the same time. K-MBA has become an energizer for my life and gave the pleasure of meeting new people and the joy of learning.

Hello, I am Sang-Bae Lee, who have graduated from Global MBA (G-MBA) program at Korea University in August 2018. I spent a year as a member of the student council during the program. I am currently working in the M&A Advisory department at Samil PwC Korea. 2. What did you do before you got into MBA program? I went to Canada in the first year of junior high school and graduated from high school and university in the United States. At Boston University, I majored in International Relations and minored in Business Administration. During my studies at Boston University, I got involved with many clubs, organizations, and activities and even founded the first Korean Start-up club called (B.U.K.E). Before returning to school after discharge from the army, I participated in a consulting project for small businesses overseas expansion and learned in strategy consulting. Also, I gained smart building related knowledge and experience while working at a company in which the graduate school classmate started. 3. Why did you choose Global MBA at Korea University? Since my major is international relations and minor is business administration, I thought to myself that I relatively lacked business related knowledge than business majors. My interest in domestic business consulting and start-up business led me to go to MBA in order to deepen my practical knowledge of business management. Furthermore, one of the reasons I chose the G-MBA is the English language curriculum which is familiar to me. I think it is a great advantage for me to be able to cultivate global capabilities by interacting with foreign friends with various background due to the nature of CEMS program. 4. Please tell us the curriculum of the Global MBA that contributes the best to your current career The M&A Advisory department where I am currently working offers strategic financial advisory services for clients for both domestic and international mergers and acquisitions. The impact of the corporate strategy class taught by professor Jungbien Moon was significant in applying for M&A advisory, which is a little different from the strategy consulting I had experienced in the past. Previously, I did not know much about M&A. However, I learned a lot about it while analyzing various management cases in class and carrying out various team projects. As a result, I became more interested in M&A consulting and I applied for Samil PwC Korea. Since I did have a relatively lack of knowledge about accounting and finance, accounting class from Professor Yong Keun Yoo and Professor Seung-Weon Yoo and finance class from Professor Chung, Ji-Woong were very helpful. The courses related to IT industry taught by Professor Se-Joon Hong and Professor Dongwon Lee, was also fascinating to me because I was interested in IT industry. I think that G-MBA classes that cover a wide range of fields have helped me to lead me where I am and who I am now. 5. What is the most helpful coaching you did get from Career Hub? As a previous member of the student council who was responsible for the communication between Career Hub and G-MBA students, the Career Hub was a big part of my graduate school life. Getting counseling from Career Hub allowed me to gain more information about the recruitment and introduced me MBA graduates who are currently working at certain companies. Thanks to the Career Hub, I was able to increase my understanding of the overall recruiting process and the companies. In particular, I could create much cleaner and eye-catching English and Korean resume through resume review program, called Resume Clinic Program. 6. Is there something you personally did to improve your career development while going to Global MBA? First of all, I made great efforts to build good credits. Often there are misconceptions among students that companies do not pay much attention to MBA credits. However, if you consider the fact that the level of highest qualification and its credits are the first things to be exposed on the resume, I think it is highly important to take care of your credits. I also read the Korean editorials issued by each newspaper every day because I could easily get a misunderstanding that I lacked the capability to fully comprehend and write the Korean report since I have been studying abroad for a long time. Those efforts are very helpful when I write and understand the industry analysis report at my current work. 7. Please provide advice for job seekers, as well college juniors seeking to pursue a career path in M&A Advisory I think that M&A Consulting is a broad field. Since you do not know which companies would ask for an advice, you must always be alert to current trends in various industries. I highly recommend reading newspaper articles and editorials on a daily basis in order to be able to identify current trends. In addition, you will have a heavy workload with papers. It would be great for you to get a certificate of MS Office to get yourself familiarized with the program and increase proficiency if you have time on your side. Most importantly, I suggest you think thoroughly about what you really want to do first and then prepare yourself to get the job. Please briefly introduce yourself Good afternoon. I am Hyeyeon Park (Class of 2011) and have graduated Korea University MBA Division of International Business last February of 2018. As of February next year, I have been appointed as a full-time professor at University of Surrey. Q. How did you prepare your doctoral thesis and appointment during the doctorate course? During my doctorate course, my first thesis in collaboration with professor Chris Changwha Chung was luckily published in the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), the TOP Journal in the International Business branch. I was able to start my graduation thesis relatively earlier from this achievement. I also had the opportunity to prepare for my research portfolio by working on other thesis along with my graduation thesis. In case of the preparation for my appointment, I began my preparation in earnest after I got my doctor’s degree. I was able to gain a lot of opportunities to have interviews with various universities around the world through an eminent business conference - Academy of Management (AoM) Placement Service which is held every summer. After going through the final Job Talk, I finally decided which university to go to. Q. What are some aspects that you think positively influenced your appointment? I believe the full-support from professors of International Business and KUBS with unstinting advice from my academic adviser allowed me to improve my competence of research and lecturing during my doctorate course. KUBS actively recommends students to participate in both Korean and overseas business conferences and supports research fellowship in many ways. As a result, I was able to receive an award for excellent research taking the presentation of my thesis in both Korean and overseas business conferences as this opportunity. Also, this allowed me to continually improve my research abilities by submitting to overseas journals. Moreover, the opportunity to improve my lecturing skills by teaching outstanding students really helped a lot. By regularly giving English lectures to students from different countries, I strived to come up with an effective teaching method. This led to receiving the award of excellent lecture and verifying my communication capabilities which as a result brought positive consequences. Q. Do you have any concerns about living abroad? I am rather thrilled than being worried since I studied my master’s course at UK. I am looking forward to having some time to broaden my field of vision as well as concentrating on my research, by starting my teaching life at UK where the burden of lecturing is relatively less than other places. Q. What are some future research plans? It is important to change the field of business of subsidiaries to achieve continuous growth in the recent rapidly-changing market. However, the reality is that many multinational corporations became to large and it is hard to bring about change by making decisions at the head office level. Therefore, I am planning to research the development regarding the field of business and improvement of performance in subsidiaries at the level of multinational firm network, as well as the method of learning by subsidiaries. Q. Do you have any advice for future global savants? If you are serious about your research and you have intellectual curiosity towards it, I recommend challenging it with hope and patience. Especially, I would like to stress the importance of regularly finding your own area of interest and preparing your research portfolio during the master’s and doctorate program, if you are interested in a foreign university. Please breifly introduce yourself. Good afternoon. I am Dawoon Jung (Class of 2011) and I have graduated Korea University MBA Division of LSOM last February. As of September 1 this year, I have been appointed as an assistant professor at Soochow University (蘇州大學). Q. How did you prepare your doctoral thesis and appointment during the doctorate course? Professor Myung Sub Park, my academic adviser, stressed the importance of preparing the thesis earlier on. Any graduate student who wants to stay in the academia will steadily prepare for their theses, so I was not an exception. Also, professor Byung Cho Kim gave a lot of motivation. He showed visions for each phase of the doctorate course. I participated in the class of preparation for foreign Business School studies made by professor Kim, and could receive a lot of support from both Korean and foreign professors by meeting them and identifying their vision. Q. What are some aspects that you think positively influenced your appointment? My broad-minded personality rather helped me a lot. I spent about 6 and a half years of time to graduate the combined master 's and doctorate program after my entrance to the graduate school, and had both good days and bad ones. I think I was able to silently deal with any difficulties by thinking generously of them. Also, I received a lot of support from professors whenever I fell behind. They led me proficiently, and I also tried hard to meet their expectations which brought good results. Q. Do you have any concerns about livng abroad? As mentioned previously, I don’t have major concerns about living abroad since I am a broad-minded person. Hence, I didn’t hesitate when applying for the appointment at a foreign university. Unlike most universities in Korea, foreign universities accept applications of professor appointment even for predeterminate degree recipients which gave a lucky opportunity to me. Q. What are some future research plans? My major is Operations Management. I am currently interested in the issue of decision making by firms after the fourth Industrial Revolution. In other words, I am focusing on the industrial trend in a changing environment of traditional competitive compositions. For now, it is hard to come with an answer regarding what business model a firm has, or who are some possible competitors. Depending on the vision of looking at the issue and situation, we can have many thoughts since we are in a period of transition. I am planning to seek new research methods by closely observing these aspects. Q. Do you have any advice for future global savants? Students will need to seriously consider about whether an appointment as a professor is what they truly want. Looking back, I also had hard times until my appointment at a foreign university. Since it is a lifelong decision, I recommend that students try their best when concerning so that when they move into the doctorate course, the effort becomes worthwhile.

An Interview with Professor Johngseok Bae, the 32nd Director of IBRE “The Goal is to establish a clear and right direction of Business Administration” Facing its 60th anniversary, the Institute for Business Research and Education (Director=Johngseok Bae, hereinbelow IBRE), is the first business research institute and has been leading the history of Korea’s business administration. <KUBS News> met him for an interview on his future vision and management philosophy. Q. You have been inaugurated as the 32nd Director of IBRE. Would you like to say a few words on the celebration? I feel both pride and sense of responsibility. It is the 60th anniversary of IBRE. Korea’s economic development has been progressed since the 1960’s, and the Institute was established before then which means it is older than my age. The IBRE has a long history and is the first business research institute that was established by a university, which is meaningful for me to become the director of IBRE. Nonetheless, the role of IBRE itself has been changing a lot. There also has been some identity crisis. Hence, I feel a sense of responsibility towards finding my role and defining a clear identity of IBRE, rather than merely feeling pleased. Also, this is a position where you must consider how to go along with the business school’s development since you are a researcher affiliated with Korea University and should make a connection with professors in the business school. To be honest, I therefore feel pride since the organization has a long history but also feel heavily responsible of how to direct the organization’s future. Q. IBRE is the first business research and education institute in our country. Please briefly introduce IBRE. Our institute’s name is IBRE (Institute for Business Research and Education). Therefore, the role of IBRE can be roughly divided into ‘Business Research’ and Business Education’. First, the support of business research is mainly conducted by eight centers, and there are two research groups below the centers. Currently, Executive Education Programs are conducted in business education. We take over a kind of industrial education where we must be concerned about how to link our research theories and outcomes with industrial sites. Thus, the IBRE should support research activities and provide research funds to ensure development of theories in each of the majors. Also, IBRE has a task of making and integrating academic-industrial cooperation so that developed theories can be applied in relevant fields. Q. What are some new goals of IBRE? The IBRE will continue with the pre-existing business but also seek new tasks that can help future development. Above all, IBRE has been contributing to create research environments and improving graduate school students’ research competence to help professors write theses. Moreover, it has been continuously comprehending new research trends and participating in challenges which will be significantly dealt with in the future as well. A new goal and direction of IBRE is ‘Effort of adapting to changes in business environment’ and ‘Founding direction of 10 Executive Education’. First, we will try to understand and adapt to a new business environment such as Big Data and Internet of Things as internal effort. To meet such conditions, IBRE has a ‘Market-oriented Big Data and Internet of Things Research Group’ under the Marketing research center. Likewise, the IBRE will try the best to lead the frequently changing business environment. Furthermore, we will endeavor to prepare humanities and philosophical basis. We need to focus on the point that firms are currently having a hard time predicting the future, and thus hoping to have outstanding predictive abilities based on humanities. Lastly, we are willing to concern deeply about social values. Although economical values and profit were a priority in the past, a direction that can both enhance economical values and find social values is discussed nowadays. Therefore, the internal goal is to change the overall direction of business administration by reflecting content related to social values in the curriculum of undergraduate studies. Followed by this is the external effort of Founding direction of 10 Executive Education. Since theories and practical affairs should be connected and integrated, setting a correct and clear vision is the goal. Q. IBRE has been contributing to the development of Korea’s economy through many ways such as publishing business administration books and producing business executives and scholars. What roles do you think should IBRE have in our rapidly changing society? The reputation of IBRE has largely decreased compared to the past. When it was first established, IBRE’s activities became the standard, and its research had indescribable important values. As time goes by, however, firms began to have research competitiveness and knowledge is becoming increasingly commercialized. Therefore, IBRE’s role should also change along with the rapidly changing environment. I believe IBRE has two main roles. The first is to find what it can do better than a firm. IBRE has excellent capabilities of predicting the future through integration, evaluation, and interpretation. This, I think is what IBRE can do much better than people at the enterprise field. Also, IBRE is superb at conceptualization capabilities of things that have a high abstract level. If we can make a good use of this, we can exhibit superior ability of predicting the changeable future. The second role is to provide the direction of business administration. Business administration is in a crisis due to some misunderstandings such as ‘Business administration cannot catch up with the field’ and ‘Talented people who majored in business administration are outstanding just after joining the company, but cannot demonstrate their abilities after four or five years’. Therefore, I believe it is the IBRE’s role to clarify business administration’s direction along with humanities and philosophical imaginations and to spread social values. Q. Do you have any comments on IBRE’s management philosophy and where it should be headed? Let me first comment on IBRE’s direction. First, we would like to act as a compass of business research and education. We can improve the connection between theories and practical affairs through providing a clear and correct direction. By having all three components: research, education, and practice, achieving connection and integration of research and the industry is the direction which firms should head to. As a management philosophy, I would like to put integrity and excellence in the center. It is important to properly conduct the right things and satisfy the persons concerned by doing one’s best even in a small program. The IBRE will do its best so that the Business School, its members, and firms in Korea can achieve mutual growth in the future.

[Interview with a Civil Service Entrance Examination Successful Candidate] Passed Within a Year of Exam Preparation - Kyung-Bae Lee (Business ‘13) Q. Please introduce yourself. Hello, I am Kyung-Bae Lee from Business Administration entering class of 2013. I passed the 2018 5th ranking Civil Service Entrance Examination, finance and economy division. I am currently taking a leave of absence and will return in the spring semester of 2019. Q. What made you prepare for the Civil Service Entrance Examination? I was thinking of a career that I can contribute to society and improve my skills at the same time. I saw the Public Service Fair posted on the SNS and that’s when I made up my mind to prepare for the exam. In fact, I had a lot of concerns during the exam preparation. I was worried that even if I passed the exam, I don’t know which department I will be assigned to. But after a consultation with Professor Soo Young Kwon, I was sure that it is what I would like to do. Professor Kwon advised me that if I passed the exam, I will involve in policymaking that can actually contribute to the society. He also told me that it will be a career that I can learn a lot. Q. What is the secret of your successful result within a year? It’s not much of a secret, but I tried not to forget three things: learn as much as you can from lectures at the university, set up a specific action plan, and make a routine for studying. First of all, I tried to make the most of lectures at the university, that are relevant to the Civil Service Entrance Examination. From 2013 to 2017, I took 19 to 21 credits, and the results were pretty good especially in business economics, organizational behavior, management mathematics, international business, and introductory statistics. These courses were related to courses I took the exam on – public administration, economics, financial affairs, statistics. I strongly recommend take lectures at the university which will shorten the duration of your exam preparation. Another thing that helped me a lot was to make a detailed plan. Most around me started the exam preparation way sooner than I did, which was a pressure for me. So I set up a detailed plan of ‘One-year master plan-monthly study plan-weekly study plan’. The one-year master plan includes the list of books I was supposed to read before the exam, and monthly study plan includes the list of lectures I must complete, followed by weekly study plan of what I should study each day. So every time I procrastinate, I checked how much I had done out of the things I was supposed to complete. That way I was able to motivate myself again. Moreover, making a routine of studying improved the efficiency of studying. I tried to stick to 8 to 10 studying at the library (8 AM to 10 PM). In fact, it was very challenging that often I had to study on Sundays as well. But I was able to make myself used to the studying routine on Sundays. Q. Was there any activities or classes at the university that particularly helped your exam preparation? If you're hesitant to start the exam preparation, I strongly recommend going talk to your academic advisor. KUBS provides frequent social events with professors, so it is easy for you to reach them. Like I mentioned earlier, courses at KUBS such as business economics, organizational behavior, management mathematics, international business, and introductory statistics helped me a lot. In addition, I was able to build a basic accounting background by microeconomics and monetary finance. More importantly, exam preparation at ‘Takmajung’ at KUBS helped me tremendously. At Takmajung, we not only study together but we also share feedback on answers we wrote. It is a great way of studying because you get to learn from a broader perspective. We also shared useful exam information or tips, so that we can make better performance on the exam. Q. What was the most challenging part of the exam preparation? It was the uncertainty of the exam result and pessimistic thoughts. For a while, I was pretty down. I was overwhelmed by exam preparation and I was in a bad mood. Whenever I got pessimistic, I called the day off early like 9 PM and took a rest for the next day. As regards other stress management, when I felt guilty after procrastinating for a long time (using mobile phone etc.) I went outside and met people to refresh myself. Q. Could you share your future plan? We haven't quite decided yet but I will definitely return to university next year for my final year at university. So in the meantime I would like to take classes and travel. After graduating from the university, I will then enter the training institute. I don’t know which department I will be working at, but my goal is to be a public official who improves welfare facilities in Korea. Q. Could you give us last words of advice to KUBS students who study for Civil Service Entrance Examination? ‘Steadiness’ is the best weapon. Once I made up my mind to study for the exam, it was hard for me to go to the library, giving up the opportunity cost of it. But looking back, I was able to pass the exam because I tried to control myself to make a steady progress. I will enter the National Human Resources Development Institute in 2020, so I imagine I will study with some of the MY KUBS readers. Good luck to you, I look forward to seeing you there!

KUBS News met them for an interview on their extraordinary passion for learning. Q. Could you please introduce yourselves? Hello. I am Young-Ho Kim, and I am Woo-Ja Choi. We are the second generation of Korean immigrants in Japan. We were both born in Fukuoka, Japan. We are running a real estate and food business ‘ZONE Inc.’. Q. How did you make up your mind to apply for AMP at KUBS? (Young-Ho Kim) I took over my father's business straight after I graduated from high school. I was busy with my work and missed a chance to study properly. Deep down I have always wanted to study and it has been one thing I found regretful in my life. And one day, I met Chairman Sang-Young Choi who is the president of KU Alumni Association in Japan and also the winner of ‘Proud KU Alumnus Award’. He recommended me to apply for AMP in Korea. So I did some research and I was fascinated by AMP’s teaching staffs who have noticeable academic achievement in addition to the professional experience. I suggested my wife study with me, and that’s how we both applied for the program. We know that flying from Japan every week is of course not easy, but we will do our best until the end of the program. Q. Is there anything in particular that you would like to learn from the program? I look forward to building a network with business leaders in Korea, especially in the internationally renowned learning environment with cutting-edge technology. I also look forward to corporate management and tax planning, in particular. In addition, the time in Korea will improve our Korean skills too. The cultural experience is another thing that we look forward to, so basically, we would like to experience Korea while studying at AMP. The first AMP program in Korea, Korea University's AMP was established in 1976. KUBS Alumni’s Unique Donation Culture The Story of Endless Donation Relay, the Love for KUBS South Korea became the world's 12th highest country of GNI (Gross National Income), however, the nation is the 62nd country for WGI (World Giving Index). Though it has been a while since Korea became one of the countries that is capable of providing financial aid to developing nations, there has been concerns that more attention needs to be paid to the donation culture in Korea. Nonetheless, Korea University, KUBS in particular continues its unique tradition of donation by its alumni. The continuous love for KUBS lives on. KUBS has been running its own scholarship program supported by the alumni, which demonstrates the unique culture and strong network at KUBS. As a result, current KUBS students now have a wider access to scholarship opportunities than ever before. Each time KUBS holds a special ceremony to appreciate the contribution. In addition, on each classroom at LG-POSCO Building as well as on every single chair in the classrooms, names of the donators are indicated to commemorate their contributions. Moreover, the Department of Development and External Affairs, the department in charge of the fundraising for the entire university, releases externally the name of donator and the amount of contribution through the media including KU News for the major donations. The Story of Endless Donation Relay, the Love for KUBS KUBS students now have a wider access to scholarship opportunities than ever before. For the recent 2 years as of fall semester 2016, approximately a total of 3.1 billion KRW has been donated to source KUBS scholarship. The total number of scholarship beneficiaries during the last two years were 1,063, inclusive of the duplicated recipients. 100 million won from Alumni Association at KPMG Samjung accounting firm (President=Seung Yeol Yang, Business ‘83) A total of 230 KU alumni accountants at KPMG Samjung accounting firm raised funds for KUBS. They pledged to contribute 20 million won every year for 5 years, 100-million-won total. The funds will source to support future accountants. President Seung Yeol, Yang mentioned “We wish the students to study in a better educational environment and grow up as accountants who lead the society. We hope we would be able to make contributions to support the School’s further improvements.” 100 million won from Mong Jin, Jeong(Business ‘79), Chairman of KCC KUBS Alumnus Mong Jin, Jeong, contributed 100 million won, which will be a source of KCC Scholarship. Mong-Jin, Chung, CEO of KCC continues his contribution to KUBS through the scholarship through the MnJ Foundation. 50 million won from Sun Yong Lee (Business ‘80), CEO of Asian Star., Inc. Sun Yong Lee, CEO of Asian Star., Inc., contributed 50 million won for the development of KUBS. He said that he was honored to return the favor that he had received. 50 million won from the KUBS Entering Class of 1986 Association In celebration of their 25th admission anniversary, the Entering Class of 1986 Association fundraised the scholarship worth 360 million won to KUBS since the 31st KUBS Alumni Night held in 2011. They also delivered 50 million won this year for the development of KUBS. 20 million won from Changsoo Heo(Business ‘67), CEO of GS Group Alumnus Changsoo Heo, CEO of GS group made a constant contribution to KUBS since 2005 through ‘Namchon Scholarship’, as requested by Jun Koo, Heo, honorary chairman of GS Engineering & Construction. The total amount of Namchon Scholarship since its commencement has reached 323 million won, with the additional donation of 20 million won in 2017. 50 million won from Ms. Hwayoung Lee, daughter of professor Sanghoon Lee Ms. Hwayoung Lee, daughter of the very first KUBS Dean Sang Hoon Lee contributed 50 million won to finance further improvement of KUBS. At the ceremony, Ms. Lee said “It feels like yesterday the day when I hung around with my father at KUBS main building. So-Am Scholarship was made by Poong-eon Jo during his lifetime to inspire the academic commitment of the students. After his death, his wife continues to follow his wish. With this donation, a total amount of contribution reached a billion won. 20 million won from Min Yoong, Yoon (Business ‘99), CEO of community ‘Soo Man Hui’ Min Woong Yoon, the CEO of the famous community for the college entrance examinees, Soo Man Hui and the CEO of a publisher, Tenball Story, contributed 20 million won to the Business School. He said that he also won scholarship twice while he was studying at KUBS after he was released from the military service. And he mentioned that he was grateful to return the scholarship that he had received – with the amount of interest as well. 50 million won from Byung Chae, Kim(Business ‘77), CEO of Poinix Byung Chae, Kim, CEO of Poinix donated 50 million won and said he always had wished to be a part the School’s improvement. [The 60th Anniversary of IBRE] Looking Back Through History of IBRE Korea’s first university-affiliated research center, Institute for Business Research & Education’s (IBRE, Director=Professor Chan Su Park) 60th anniversary of the foundation has come. It has been a fundamental step to Korea University Business School’s development to one of the top note universities in the world. Looking back through the history of IBRE, there have been two major stages of the center’s development. For the first 40 years, IBRE focused on institute-oriented research projects, education projects, publication, and held academic events as ‘IBRE-oriented period’. Since the mid-90s, ‘center-oriented period’, IBRE has focused on establishing research centers classified by majors, following a drift towards subdivision of business administration. ‘Business Research Focused Period’ IBRE commenced in 1958, 1st of June, it was an affiliated institution of the College of Commerce, Korea University. Within two years of its establishment, IBRE was grown to be a part of Korea University, and it performed a management efficiency assessment of ‘First City Bank of Korea’. IBRE first published ‘Korea University Business Journal’, which is the very first weekly business journal in Korea. In 1962, IBRE was in charge of cost accounting test on Cheil Industries Inc. and 2 other companies. It was the first cost accounting assessment performed by a university research institute in Korea. In addition, IBRE contributed to the extension of the application of business administration to the Korean government and public sectors. One of the examples is ACMS (Army Command Management System) performed from 1961 to 1963, which is the adoption of business administration to the military forces. Another example is a research on government administration requested by the Government’s Administrative Reform Committee in 1965. In addition to that, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry commissioned IBRE to create management indicators for small and medium-sized enterprises and conduct the first domestic per unit production cost inquiry. Since the mid-1980s, IBRE held academic conferences with renowned universities overseas, which promoted academic exchange in Korea and further. At the same time, IBRE affirmed its position as the first and best university-affiliated institute by the publication of a range of journals in addition to KU Business Journal. IBRE issued ‘Business Monthly Newsletter’, as well as ‘Price Level Monthly Newsletter’ and ‘Business Research’ in 1964. IBRE also issued other types of publications: △The Completed Works of Business Administration △The Completed Works of Accounting △The Collection of Business Administration △A Compendium of Business Administration △Dictionary of Business Administration △A Series of Business Administration. ‘IBRE Sub-center Focused Period’ With the establishment of a Center for Asian Business Research in 1995, IBRE opened up its new era of the center-oriented development. IBRE commenced a variety of research centers to promote the specialization of each division in business administration. In addition, IBRE developed to a key institute of academic-industrial cooperation by the commencement of corporate training program. Designed for the success of a business’s goal and strategy, the corporate training program was first started ‘MBA Program at Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’ in 1999. In 2017, IBRE started △RM Prestige Program at Shinhan Bank △SK Win-win Growth MBA Program △Global Leadership Course at CJ Cheil Jedang Corporation △Hi-Business School Program at Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance. On the other hand, IBRE continued its work on publication; from 2008 to 2013, IBRE issued an annual ‘Business Operation Way’ as a part of the collaboration with the Federation of Korean Industries. The growth of IBRE is continuing, so as its attempts at new projects. In 2017, IBRE organized a research group – a smaller unit than the research center to best focus on the rapidly emerging areas of research. Examples include ‘Market-oriented Big Data and IoT Research Group’ and ‘Management Philosophy Research Group’ commenced in December 2017. IBRE aims to work on further establishments of research groups organized by the researchers’ areas of interest. [The 60th Anniversary of IBRE] Memoirs of Professor Emeritus Professor Emeritus Cho, Ik Soon, Professor Emeritus Jee, Chung Cho Ik Soon, Professor emeritus / Former Director of IBRE (7th, 8th, 14th) It is such an honor to be a part of the 60th-anniversary celebration of the establishment of IBRE (Institute for Business Research & Education). On this congratulatory remark, I would like to highlight the context of the establishment of IBRE, which was in fact quite demanding at the period of time. I do not think there is anyone who probably knows. After the Pacific War, there have been movements in rationalizing the existence of Japanese enterprises operated in the U.S. In particular, the United States Operations Mission (USOM) asked Professor Yoon, Byeong Ook, who has just returned from Germany after his study, for theoretical justification of the operation of Japanese enterprises. The USOM paid attention to the ways in which the management of Korea’s Armed Forces had been justified after the Korean War. The USOM also focused on how Professor Yoon was in charge of business justification seminar that was requested by employees at enterprises from the enemy country. So these were the context of the establishment of the very first business research institute from the best and largest university in Korea. In the beginning, IBRE’s main tasks were to conduct a business assessment, market research, business justification seminar, cost accounting as well as a range of publication in business administration. IBRE was indeed a pioneer in this respect as well. Since the institute carried out quite a lot of projects, researchers at the Business School worked together with professors to complete the tasks. The performance of IBRE was successful in every task, which demonstrates its position as the best university-affiliated research institute in Korea. I will point out few of the key achievements of the institute. First of all, a large number of the researchers at IBRE were appointed as professors at the College of Commerce in the early stage of the adaption of the modern tertiary education system in South Korea. More specifically, the number of confirmed researchers at IBRE who were later appointed as professors is 41; there are 20 more whom I need the confirmation. The second thing I should point out is cost accounting. In fact, one of the researchers at IBRE, Mr. Oh-Gil Choi, became a founder of a business. It is obvious that projects he was working on at the research institute, such as cost accounting projects for pricing a product in an automobile business and business analysis allowed him to be familiar with the overall operation of the automobile business. The projects on cost accounting provided a strong foundation for running his own business later on. Furthermore, I should also point out the achievement of the IBRE is the inspection of the state-owned enterprise in January 1970. There is a news report of the content of the inspection on January 19, 1970. Ik Soon Cho is appointed as the chairman of the Audit Committee of the Government's management enterprises, Sangman Lee, a professor at Seoul National University, as the first Lead Manager, and Yoonkyung Shin as the second lead manager. Work is divided up by National Tax Service (Investment and Construction Management), Productivity Center (Production Management, Sales) Industrial Management Research Center at Chungang University (analysis of business plans and results), IBRE at Korea University (cost management, financial accounting, management), Industrial Management Research Center at Yonsei University (human resources, organization and administrative affairs management). Professor Youngyun Yoon and professor Jangchun Ha from Korea University handled auditing practices and integration of audit reports for each field. I was in charge of the comprehensive report. This triggered IBRE to evaluate the annual business results of the government investment institution, and based on the results, was responsible for the government's decision on the year-end bonus payment rate. The last thing to mention is the computerization of financial data of listed companies and the research on the creation of databases contributed to the stock market’s development. Professor Sang Koo Nam was the chief of the research. These are only just a few key achievements of what IBRE has accomplished since its establishment; much more has been done, the institute has made the constant contribution to South Korea’s economic development. I am sure IBRE will continue its position in the future: the very first and the largest, No.1 business research institute in Korea. Professor Emeritus Jee, Chung / Chairman of the Board of Social Science Academy, Former director of IBRE (15th) First of all, I sincerely celebrate the 60th anniversary of IBRE. IBRE was founded on June 1, 1958, the year when I entered Korea University. The special bond between IBRE and me has started in August 1962 when I completed the military service. Professor Hyo Rok Kim and professor Byeong Ook Yoon, deputy director, advised me to temporarily work for the public relations department. I was responsible for a wide range of publications during my term at IBRE, such as 6 volumes of ‘The Complete Collection of Business Administration’, 6 volumes of ‘The Complete Collection of Accounting’, ‘A Compendium of Business Administration’, as well as editing of ‘Monthly Research Journal of Business Administration’. I was also in charge of the request of the manuscript and 4 times of correction. Later on, I served as the head of the department of newspaper publication for ‘Korea University Business Journal’ with Changgyu Hwang, assistant administrator (later professor at Sookmyung Women’s University and Dongguk University). After the start of my postgraduate degree, I was able to work as an official researcher of IBRE and appointed to the manager of the general affairs department. After my study in the United States, I became a full-time professor at Korea University, as well as the advisory committee members, member of the board of directors. Later I was appointed as the director of IBRE in 1987. Since I remained as a counselor of IBRE until the retirement even after the term. So basically, I worked for IBRE eight to nine years longer than I worked as a full-time professor at KUBS. Led by the late professor Yoon, Byeong Ook, IBRE was the core institution of the Korea University Business School. At the time of the establishment, there was no specialized research institute in Korea. Therefore, each and every external activity carried out at IBRE were "Korea's first". In addition to the Korea's first business assessment, cost accounting, industry census on mining and manufacturing, management indicators of small and medium-sized enterprises, etc., as well as the command and control system handbook and Korean Army's command and control system manual and administrative reform of the government were also one of the IBRE’s tasks. Not many know the fact that all these plans were approved and established by the government. Another remarkable thing to note is that establishment of ‘Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information’ as an independent institution was led by the late professor Yoon, Byeong Ook. ‘Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information’ is founded with an ambition to set up a research institution that is comparable with KIST. While I was serving the term as a director of IBRE, I was working on the research assistance of professors and founding commemoration projects, celebrating the 30th anniversary. In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the foundation May 1988, 43 distinguished scholars in Korea and overseas participated in the international symposium, holding enthusiastic discussions and presentations. Professors at the University of Southern California (USC) IBEAR, as well as professors from Seoul National University and Korea University participated in the symposium. In the following year, 27 domestic and overseas professors participated in an international conference held in USC. The last thing I would like to talk about is the international conference IBRE held in collaboration with the ‘Economic Growth Center" and ‘East-Rock Institute’ at Yale University in November 1988. Professor at Yale University, Seoul National University, and Sogang University, and the author participated in the event. Since the above three international conferences were the largest international conferences held at IBRE, it is worth to keep it recorded. [Internship Abroad | Overseas Korean Trades Association] "Gain Broader Perspective on Diverse Industries as Well as on My Career Path” Q. What were your job descriptions? I had an international internship from Overseas Korean Trades Association (OKTA) in Los Angeles in 2018 winter. Basically I was responsible for basic assistant works such as preparing the association’s events, publishing relevant documents and brochure, membership list management, etc. Everyone at the Association, including the president and the secretary-general, was very nice and supportive, which was a big relief during the internship. Q. What was the most memorable event? I would say a visit to the International Consumer Electronics Show 2018 held in Las Vegas was the most impressive event than anything else. I was able to see the current technology trends and experience various new products from many companies around the world during the two days. Samsung Electronics, LG, and other domestic companies participated in the exhibition on a large scale were also impressive. I guarantee that if you are looking for a job in the industry, you should not miss the events like CES 2018. However, because CES is held only in Winters, students participating in Summer internships will not be able to attend the event. Instead, you might want to participate in OKTA LA’s ‘Next Generation Trade School’ which is held in every summer. The ‘Next Generation Trade School’ will be a great opportunity to work on business projects, prepare for presentations so that the participants will learn from the experts in the field. Q. How was life in LA? Winter in LA is warm. It was a bit chilly in the early morning and evening, but during the day it is quite sunny and hot that you want to put on summer outfits. If you plan to visit LA in winter, like me, you might want to bring outfits that you wear in summer or early fall in Korea. However, do bring jumpers that you can wear in the morning and nights. The sun was quite strong as well, do not forget to bring sunblock, sunglasses and a hat. The executive office provides a part of the expenses spent on lunch, unlike the accommodation, which is not supposed to be provided to us. However, the chairman arranged the residence for us so thankfully, all three of us were able to stay there. It was around 30 minutes’ distance by walk from the office. I took buses or Uber only when I am running out of time. On the other hand, there were also things that I did not like, too: overall price levels and public transport. The general price is much higher in the United States than in South Korea, and the public transport in South Korea is way more convenient than in the U.S. Since buses or subways are running few and far between, I did not use them as much. Also it is not a good idea to take the public transport in the night for the sake of your safety. Take Uber or rent a car if you plan to travel to the U.S. Q. Could you give us any other thoughts on your internship experience? Despite such a short period of time, I was able to learn a lot during my internship at OKTA. It was such a great chance to work with the experts from diverse areas and broaden my knowledge and skills. CES was also a highly rewarding event to attend, where I was able to study current technological developments that I was not even aware of earlier. Overall, it was such an inspirational and life-changing two months in my life, which I gained a broader perspective on diverse industries as well as on my career path. [International Student Exchange] A Memorable Time Spent in China I spent a semester at Ghanghua School of Management, Peking University, China, during the Fall semester, 2017. Ghanghua School of Management is one of the schools where top students in China are admitted, and I was able to experience that myself – they have strong academic commitment. Ghanghua School of Management offers separate classes for exchange students. Each course consists of 8, 12, and 16 weeks’ programs, and so you can earn credit hours depending on the duration of the course. Most classes open for exchange students are taught in English. In fact, I did not have much chance to meet with the local students at the university. I joined one of the university’s societies so that I can socialize with local students. The main task we did at the society was to meet up for a rehearse every week, and that’s when I made quite a lot of local friends. I also attended ‘language-exchange buddy’ program, where I was able to improve my Chinese and English with my language buddy. Life in China was way more convenient than I thought it would be. You can make payments with your mobile phone, and the bike share system was very accessible anywhere in the city. Overall price is much lower than South Korea and the delivery service was very useful, too. I won’t forget the times I had during my exchange semester in China. I think exchange programs are such a great chance that you can only access during your degree, that allows you to have a valuable experience overseas. Yeonju Lee (Business’15)

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers? I received my master’s and PhD in international business at Korea University. I am a “domestic” PhD holder, if you like. After completing PhD, I worked at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada for two years as a postdoctoral researcher. I started applying in winter 2017, when I decided to settle in at schools overseas and got appointed as an assistant professor at the University of Groningen, Netherlands this March. Q. What made you start for a postgraduate degree? I worked for a company for a while after my undergraduate study. As work took over my everyday life, I thought, “If this keeps going, a life that keeps me from going any further than what I am already capable of, any hopes of a better future would be nonexistent.” What could I do for the rest of my life without getting tired of, and enable self-actualization at the same time? The answer led me to postgraduate study. Q. What do you think is the benefit of study for a postgraduate degree at KUBS; Could you tell us what types of assistance did you get from the School? Professors, especially those in international business, help both PhD students and master’s students out so they can attend and give presentations at international seminars. Also, the KUBS graduate program supports students as well, so students can participate in international seminars with a minimum concern on the financial burden. During my PhD, I was able to attend international seminars quite often actually, as a part of the support from my professors and the School. I was able to ask questions and get advice from researchers across the world. I think that was one of the things that helped me a lot as I made job applications overseas. Q. What were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome during your study, and how did you get through them? Nothing actually comes to mind when I look back. Probably because I’m much more optimistic than the average person. I tried not to compare myself to others and instead focused on my own dynamics, and this attitude undoubtedly helped me get through the doctoral degree. Q. Any tips on how to work on your thesis and the appointment to professorship? The most important thing is to think carefully about what your goal is and be committed to your goal. You must be aware of the distinction between universities in Korea and overseas, and you should be prepared accordingly. You must have a concrete idea of what you would like to achieve and work on your thesis portfolio; I think these are the keys to reach your goal. Q. What areas of study are you planning to concentrate on? The main issue is corporate social responsibility. I am researching the reasons why MNCs must fulfill CSR, to persuade not only corporations but stakeholders as well. It is what I plan to focus on for the next 10 years or so.

I am majoring in Business Administration, entering class of 2012. I currently work for L’Oreal Korea. Q. What are some major experiences during your undergraduate years that helped you start off on your career? I participated in four internships during my undergraduate degree, searching for the type of work and the field I wanted to build a career in. Thanks to hands-on work experience and learning by trial and error, I was able to establish my career path - marketing specialized in foreign affiliated consumer goods. Q. What was the reason that you chose to work for L’Oreal? Apart from my interest and experience in the field, I thought I will be a good fit for the unique culture at L’Oreal. L’Oreal runs internship programs twice a year, and their job positions are open to those with internship experience at L’Oreal only. During the internship for a couple of months, I was able to experience real-life office culture. L’Oreal highly values an active attitude and flexibility of ideas, and I was convinced that I am a good fit for it. Q. Could you tell us more about your job description and some of the characteristics of the corporate culture at L’Oreal? L’Oreal offers an MT Program designed for its new employees. It is the L’Oreal’s unique program that the employees’ work for a variety of departments for the first six to 18 months. It allows them to get the idea on the overall operation of the company. The purpose of the program is for the new employees to be familiar with the company’s business models, as well as their diverse job descriptions. The program is also a great start to build a network with other employees, so I think the MT program is one of the key aspects that represent the overall corporate culture at L’Oreal. I am building experience on a variety of tasks as a part of the MT Program. Currently I am in charge of digital marketing and PR of the new and improved La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo[+] launch in the IMC+ E-Commerce team of the Hospital and Pharmacy Business Division. It is very rewarding when I read the target consumers’ positive reviews on our products, after the online advertisement I was responsible for. I think the corporate culture is quite horizontal, which I am highly satisfied and grateful that even though I am a junior at the office I am allowed to make a decision and lead my own projects. It is quite nice that I get used to different types of job descriptions within the short period of time, which is very rewarding in terms of my personal development as well. Q. Could you share your tips on how you prepared for the job applications? I had my English resume and cover letter edited by my seniors, professors, as well as KUBS Career Hub. I went over them multiple times to make sure that they are clear and precise. As regards interviews, I kept reminding myself that “I am just having a conversation – I am interviewing the interviewer!” to take it easy. I tried to make sure that I emphasized some of the keywords during the interview so I can make an articulate speech. If you are interested in applying for a job in the cosmetics industry, I recommend that you must articulate your ideas in ways in which you can demonstrate your interest in the industry.

It is the 60th anniversary of Institute of Business Research Education (IBRE). Would you like to say a few words on the celebration? First of all, I am very proud of the institute’s long history. It is Korea’s very first business research institute established by a university. IBRE has been a pioneer in many aspects. In the 1950s when the term ‘business administration’ was not even widely used, IBRE was the very first institute that carries on researches in diverse areas such as military service and government service. IBRE played a key role in the dissemination of knowledge and skills in business administration. Looking back through the history of IBRE, I feel grateful and respectful of the contribution that former IBRE members had made. Q. Above all other tasks, what are the most memorable activities you have done? First is the establishment of ‘research sub-groups’ at IBRE. For 40 years since its establishment in 1958, the main emphasis of IBRE had been on business research and education. Researches at IBRE were then held by sub-centers of each research area, starting from the Center for Asian Business Research in 1995. About 20 years later, IBRE then started conducting researches by sub-groups for more specialized researches. I remember meeting with professors to reach a consensus on the research groups. Another thing is the achievement of the funding sustainability at IBRE. There had been concerns on the reduction of the fund after financing academic conferences and seminars held by each center at IBRE. However, partial support from the Graduate School of Business slowed down the speed of reduction. It is almost the end of my term at IBRE, but it is a relief that the sustainability of funding has remarkably increased. I am very hopeful that it will provide stable support for IBRE’s better performance in the future. Q. Do you have any comments on the improvement of IBRE’s performance in the future – where IBRE should be headed? I think IBRE should put more emphasis on the diversification of its research groups, so that we facilitate researches from a wide range of academic areas. To achieve that, it is fundamentally important to provide supports to professors by adopting well-organized business education programs, for example. An adequate assistance from the Institute will contribute to a better quality of research, which will later be recognized by the global rankings as well. “We Would Like to Thank Our Colleagues Who Are Always Willing to Cooperate” - Interview with Winners of 2018 Outstanding Staff Contribution Awards: Assistant Manager Sung Pyo Jang, Senior Staff Yong Ki Kim - Celebrating Korea University’s anniversary, the List of 2018 Outstanding Contribution Awards for Administrative Staffs has been announced. Awardees from the Business School are Assistant Manager Sung Pyo Jang and Senior Staff Yong Ki Kim. We met for an interview with our proud winners. △ Assistant Manager Sung Pyo Jang, Senior Staff Yong Ki Kim Q. Could you briefly talk to us about yourselves, please. Sung Pyo Jang (JANG) | I started my career at Korea University in March 2000. I was first appointed to Information System Development Department of the Office of Information & Computing for 16 years. Then I was appointed to the Business School in March 2016, now I am in charge of human resources of the faculty, research, and other undergraduate administrations. Yong Ki Kim (KIM) | I started my career at Korea University in 2009 at the Office of General Affairs. Then I was appointed to the Business School last year. I am responsible for building security, hygiene, and facilities maintenance. Q. Could you tell us how you feel about the award? JANG | Very happy, thanks for asking. It means a lot to me since it is the second year after the appointment to the Business School. At the same time, I know it is not an award just for me; it is for my amazing team and all other staffs at KUBS who are always willing to cooperate. We have very talented and enthusiastic staffs at KUBS administrative offices, I would like to attribute the award to my colleagues. KIM | I feel exactly the same. I didn’t know what to say. It was a nice surprise, really. I was very happy the first day I heard the news, but then it turned to heavy responsibility the day after. Like ‘the carrot and the stick’, I consider this award is ‘a carrot’ that makes me remind of ‘a stick’ to keep on a hard work. Q. What do you think has most attributed to the award? JANG | During my 2 years at the Business School, I was in charge of the evaluation of the School, renovation of Business School buildings and setting up information system of KUBS. I assume they gave credits on my performance on those. I remember I said ‘I will do my best’ on the official appointment to the Business School. And I did my best to keep the words I said. I would not be able to complete the works if it hadn’t for my colleagues. I would like to thank them again. KIM | A lot of my works at Business School requires me to work individually, not as a team, which made me feel under pressure sometimes. So I tried to proceed tasks straight after I got requests. I also tried my best not to forget the issues that have been raised regarding my duties. I felt quite heavy responsibilities and sometimes I was not sure if I would be able to complete the tasks successfully, to be honest. But thanks to all the support from executive manager, assistant managers and staffs at KUBS, I was able to move on. Q. What do you think an ideal university administration is? Could you share with us of your thoughts on administration at university? JANG | Administration at universities is different from that of private organizations. In general, the purpose of firms is to maximize profits, but that is not necessarily the case for universities. Therefore, the role of staffs at universities is not the same as that of private organizations. I think the willingness to provide service is very important for administrative staffs at universities. After all, one of the most important duties of university staffs is to support faculty members to provide quality education to students, and students to maximize their learning experience at the university. So I think administrative staffs must be committed to best quality services to faculty and students. From small things like greeting the visitors with a smile, for example. KIM | That’s a very difficult question. I think what is important for groups and organizations is to cooperate, and willing to support your colleagues. I think that’s what makes an ideal organization. You know how people say ‘people come first’; I believe caring people around you leads to the most ideal outcome for an organization. Q. Do you have any last word you would like to share with administrative staffs at KUBS? JANG | We have very talented staffs, enthusiastic and always put first what is best for the School. I should mention that I feel lucky to be able to work with such inspirational colleagues. I like the phrase ‘best of luck’, although I know that luck comes to those who look after it, who make the best effort. I am sure luck will come to those who keep the hard work. KIM | I would like to thank my colleagues as well. At first, everything was new to me, which made me lost quite often. But thanks to my colleagues at KUBS I feel grateful coming to work every day. I hope we could maintain the close network and look forward to many more chances to be close to each other in the future.
